THE SCHOOL PROJECT – AYAKKAD RENOVATION
The Ayakkad School Renovation is a sensitive architectural intervention that transforms an existing educational facility into a vibrant, comfortable, and inspiring learning environment. Designed within strict budgetary constraints, the project focuses on enhancing the building through thoughtful additions rather than extensive reconstruction. The design takes inspiration from the surrounding architecture and local traditions, creating a contemporary identity while respecting the school’s original character.
The defining feature of the renovation is the addition of an external colonnade that wraps around the existing structure, forming spacious covered corridors. This architectural layer breaks the monotony of the original façade, introduces a strong visual identity, and provides shaded circulation spaces that improve user comfort throughout the year. A new roof over the corridor protects students from rain and harsh sunlight while enhancing the overall functionality of the building.
The redesigned verandas serve as interactive spaces that encourage collaboration, social interaction, and informal learning beyond the classroom. Natural light filters through the layered corridors, creating bright yet comfortable interiors that contribute to a positive educational atmosphere. The intervention also addresses practical concerns by improving ventilation, reducing heat gain, and resolving long-standing water leakage issues through an upgraded roofing system.
The material palette features traditional Mangalore roof tiles and muted colours inspired by neighbouring buildings, ensuring harmony with the surrounding context. By combining climatic responsiveness, functional improvements, and contextual design, the Ayakkad School Renovation demonstrates how carefully considered architectural interventions can revitalise existing educational spaces, creating a sustainable, welcoming, and enduring environment for students, teachers, and the wider community.
