The residence of Mr. Mehmood is a single storey house set in a plot of 1 acre with slight  sloping contour in the town of Kanhangad. The sprawling site posed a major challenge – the natural drainage of the area flowed across the site onto low lying lands.  The design had to first address this issue by providing an underground canal through the  site diverting the drainage path, passing beneath a promenade that runs along the  periphery of the compound. The terrain of the site imposed constraints that led to a  zoning with the building placed in the centre with considerable front yard as well as  backyard. 

The design follows the traditional Kerala philosophy of planning rooms overlooking a  central courtyard. There is a gradual progression from guest areas to family areas, with  the privacy of spaces increasing as one proceeds through the house. 

The house features a long verandah along its rear side connecting the rooms,  accessible from common spaces as well as from bedrooms. This transition corridor  bridges the interior space with the exterior, overlooking the backyard with the pool,  creating a private haven for the family to relax.
